The Colour of Tree is a really different piece for me. For quite a while I've been wanting to incorporate textiles into my jewellery. In this piece I've finally done that.
The pendant began life as a piece of tree agate. I wondered what would happen if I fired it. I decorated it with silver clay, and fired it. Just to see.
Well, it survived the firing, but it was significantly altered. The green patterning on the stone has gone brown. It's as if the green has been burned away. I love the effect though, of the shining bright silver, against the colours of the stone - it's as if the silver was formed right there, on this stone.
The pendant is suspended from a double length of hand-dyed silk ribbon, and a strand of mixed seed beads (with sterling silver beads sneaking their way in every so often), in varying colours of "tree". A sterling silver twisted toggle clasp fastens this piece. The Colour of Tree is approx 54cm long (21½"), but this can be adjusted a little by twisting the stands more or less.
It's quite unique. Very simple, very much fun, and also very elegant.
