This is a longer necklace. A much longer necklace, in fact. Worn at its full length, The Moon and the Stars measures 72½cm (28¼ inches) around, with the pendant hanging another 9cm (3½ inches) from the chain.
However, it is eminently adjustable with many parts even made to be removable to allow you to wear it as you please.
The Moon and the Stars can be adjusted to just over 68cm (26¾ inches), 65cm (25½ inches), 61½cm (24¼ inches) and, believe it it or not, 36cm (just over 14 inches) if you desire it to be worn very close to the neck. It easily adjusts to this shorter length by doubling the chain over and passing it through the loop on the pendant.
The pendant is made with handmade clay raku beads by Stan Roberts of xaz beads. The feature bead, measuring 2cm (¾ of an inch) across and being approximately 6mm (½ an inch) thick, is an adinkra, 'Osram ne nsoromma' (representing love, faithfulness, harmony) meaning 'The moon and the star', or in this case the moon and the stars, since underneath this round bead hang five shiny little square raku beads from lengths of chain.
The pendant has been given a relatively large loop (4mm inside diameter) so that it can be removed and hung from your own favourite neckware if none of the lengths allowed on the chain are quite suitable for you.
The sterling silver chain used throughout his necklace is the finest chain and one of the prettiest I've ever seen. Each tiny (yet surprisingly solid-looking) link is only 1mm wide.
The back of The Moon and the Stars fastens with a shepherd hook style clasp to another hook. From this second hook dangles a sixth square raku bead to assist the clasp in staying at the back of the neck.
This dangle hangs from its own shepherd hook and can be removed and attached to the top of the pendant, giving a slightly different look and larger loop (just under 5mm inside diameter) to pass your own necklace through if the loop on the pendant isn't quite large enough .. or even if you just prefer your pendant to hang a bit longer.
All wire, clasps and rings used in The Moon and the Stars are sterling silver except for the headpins used to hold the square beads. These are made from a base metal.
